I had the best weekend.
Today I am punting the business article I was ready to post and writing this instead to express some gratitude.
LFG. 🔥
Skateboarding With The Little Dude
Watching kids grow is fascinating.
When they learn new things, they learn them slowly and then all at once.
The Little Dude has been learning to ride a scooter, and suddenly this weekend he went from zero to full speed.
On Friday night, all the families were hanging in the alley out back. Julian grabbed his scooter and felt brave enough to ride all the way around the block and back up the alley.
I grabbed my skateboard and started riding with him and the rest of the boys.
You have to understand how much I love skateboarding. There’s nothing like cruising down the street on a warm spring night.
After about 30 laps, The Little Dude and I went for one more run. It was dark and warm. He rode the sidewalk and I rode the street.
Out of nowhere I got hit with a wave of euphoria. I was riding with my son and felt like I was passing down something sacred, something he could only understand through experience.
After that last lap he said, “Dada, my arms and legs are tired.”
I remember that feeling. It’s one of the happiest places I’ve ever been. That bone-deep fatigue after skating all day.
It filled me with so much joy I thought my heart was going to burst.
I Took The Little Dude To His First Grappling Class
Martial arts is a spiritual experience for me. I always say Muay Thai is church and the cold plunge is God. God is cold.
Now that The Little Dude is four, he was able to attend his first jiu jitsu class.
At first, he was nervous. He wouldn’t participate and kept wandering over to the weights. He didn’t respond when the coaches spoke to him.
Eventually, one of the coaches connected with him and The Little Dude opened up. For the next 45 minutes, he listened, paid attention, and stayed engaged.
I was so proud. I felt insanely proud.
Sweaty Sparring Session
On Saturdays, I train hard Muay Thai.
This Saturday was hot. The gym doors were open, the music was blaring, and we were having a blast.
Saturdays are brutal because we train for an hour and then spar. Midway through sparring is when the fatigue sets in. This is when training matters most. It’s easy to look sharp when you’re fresh, but technique only sticks when you’re tired.
I was sparring with a southpaw. I got lazy. I got hit with a liver kick I didn’t see coming and for the first time in months I got dropped.
When you get hit in the liver, your body shuts down. It’s hard to describe unless you’ve felt it. It’s not like getting punched in the face. It’s more like an off switch. Your legs stop working.
I felt my abs lock up and folded over. My opponent asked if I was okay and I told him it was great placement. My coach started laughing at me and eventually I got back up and kept going.
By the end we were all exhausted, bruised, and happy.
The ten minutes after sparring when we sit around and talk is one of my favorite parts. I felt so grateful for my gym, my community, my passion for fighting, and the progress I’ve made.
I loved it.
The Little Dude Turned Into A GQ Model
I’ve been wanting to grow out The Little Dude’s hair. I love brushing it.
I’ll admit it was getting a bit scrappy. Jules has been begging me to let him cut it, but I stood my ground.
This is what he looked like on Saturday.
On Sunday, Jules took the kids with her to grab a chai latte. She FaceTimed me and said The Little Dude wanted a haircut. He looked right at me and told me he wanted a hair cut. There was nothing I could say. It’s his hair and if he wants to cut it, then he can do what he wants.
I came home from walking Alice and this is what I saw.
Unbelievable.
I was speechless. I can’t believe how breathtakingly beautiful this Little Dude is. Look at him. He’s better looking than I am. :)
I don’t know how to explain the feelings I had. The whole weekend felt like one unexplainable moment after another.
It was the best weekend. Just the best.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
