One of the most challenging aspects of being a leader is knowing what to focus on.
In any given moment, there are hundreds if not thousands of demands for attention. Everyone wants something done, and in everyone’s mind, what they want to get done is the most important.
The reality is that almost everything is unimportant.
And only a few things are actually important.
The things that are important are very very important.
The 80/20 rule exists everywhere in nature.
80% of the sunlight is consumed by 20% of trees. 80% of matter in the universe exists in 20% of stars. And 80% of the results you get from life come from 20% of the actions you take.
Unfortunately, the human mind defaults to “more” instead of less.
more employees
more software
more tools
more SOPs
more processes
In almost every case, the answer is simply to stop doing the things that don’t matter and to do more of what does.
The trick is taking the time to figure out what’s important. Once you know, the hard part is never veering off course.
