Becoming a better speaker
I have so many fun and challenging adventures in my life. Raising a son and a daughter is enlightening. They are teaching me so much about myself. (Not all of it is pleasant to learn).
My businesses are thriving.
I’m living the dream.
So then what is this nagging feeling I have? This constant demand from myself that I should be doing more? Or that I should be doing better?
I felt like I needed to challenge myself physical, so I took up Muay Thai and have been intensely training for a full year with total consistency. I’ve been lifting with my wife on a regular basis.
I felt like I needed to challenge myself professionally, so I reorganized my company structure and fully dedicated myself to writing, marketing my companies, and generating new sales.
I’ve continued to push myself, and I’ve continued to grow in my self development.
But I want to do more.
Why is it that I continue to look for struggle? Why am I so obsessed with being uncomfortable and finding areas in my life that I want to continue improving?
Is this an unhealthy obsession? Or is this a gift of self discovery?
I think my next personal challenge is going to be learning how to be a better speaker.
I’ve always been insecure about speaking. I stutter and trip over my words. My northern accent is awful. I pause frequently because I can’t think and talk at the same time. I don’t think I have a particularly nice voice.
I want to learn how to be more of a presence on my podcast. I want to be a better guest on other people’s podcasts. My voice is my most powerful tool, but I never try to improve it’s effectiveness.
This morning at the gym, I was listening to a great episode on The Diary of a CEO. It peaked my interest and I think I will try to improve this aspect of my life next.
After all, I was approached recently with my first speaking opportunity at a big even next year. I’d like to do well and of course, not fall on my face.
