Coming Up For Air
Today I am making it a point to go slow, relax, and take some time to myself.
I have a busy day, and there is much I want to do today, but the last 5 days have been grueling. Here’s what happened.
Our product for Copyblogger is called Copyblogger Pro. It is a membership platform that provides resources, education and community for people who want to build better businesses by becoming better writers.
It’s a very large site and a huge community, and it’s something that I care about very much.
The problem was that our product wasn’t everything I wanted it to be. I felt like it was lacking, and if people are going to pay me their hard earned money, I want to make sure they get the best experience possible.
So I spent the last 5 days moving everything over to a new membership platform. Most of the work was transferring files, which is annoying more than it is hard.
The tricky problem to solve was moving over the payment processor. The new platform is called Mighty Networks, and although it has a brilliant user experience, it lacks in some of it’s ability to customize payment functionality.
I won’t get into all the technicalities, but just know that I have spent the last 4 days knee deep into development documentation trying to figure out how to create API’s in Zapier so that when a new user creates a transaction on a third party payment processor, they are then sent an invite to the community.
It was really hard, but I figured it out.
I feel really proud of myself. I am not the type who enjoys solving technical problems like that, but it was a really important problem to solve and I feel great about it.
But… there’s no question that I have been way too consumed with this. I’ve been eating my meals in my office, I haven’t been taking my usual 30 minutes in the morning to read and write, and I feel a bit scattered.
Every time someone called me on the phone or (I’m embarrassed to say) when Jules would come upstairs to say hi, I would be talking to them, but in my mind I wasn’t really talking to them. I could only think about figuring out how to create this payment functionality.
No regrets. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
But today I’m taking my foot off the gas pedal.
Have a great day.
