How Failing Publicly Makes Me More Money Than Playing It Safe Ever Did
You can thank Steven Pressfield for this one
Yesterday was the soft launch of The Launchpad.
There were a couple of technical mishaps. Lol. But I would argue that launching your work (and your mistakes) in front of everyone is the better way.
Today, I want to explain why I’m building everything in public and in real time. I think it helps ease the anxiety most people feel about putting out work that is good enough.

The Fear of Perfection That Holds Most People Back
As I mentioned when I announced The Launchpad, there were mistakes. About 10 people tried to buy the product but landed on the wrong page.
Here’s what happened. I changed the name of the platform right before launch. Circle had a default name, “Tim’s Community.” Right as I sent the announcement email, I changed it to “Agency Clarity.” That change updated the URL. Since the email was already written, I didn’t catch it. When people clicked the button, they ended up in the wrong place.
Simple mistake, but I bet it cost me about eight signups.
Most people see something like this and immediately think they failed. We beat ourselves up, saying things like, “I’m so stupid. I can’t believe I made such a dumb mistake.” Then we spiral, waste hours feeling bad, and struggle to get back on track.
This fear is what keeps most people from sharing their work or putting themselves out there. The fear of being embarrassed in public is one of the biggest fears humans face.
But for me? I embrace it.
Why? Because it makes life easier. Let me explain.
“I’ll Publish When It’s Ready”
There’s always a reason to decide something isn’t good enough.
There’s always a reason to think you’re not ready. Some common excuses sound like:
“My camera isn’t good enough.”
“I don’t have a big enough audience.”
“People will know I’m a fraud.”
“If I mess up, no one will take me seriously.”
“I’m not a good enough writer.”
This is what Steven Pressfield calls “The Resistance.” In The War of Art, he describes the invisible force we all feel when we sit down to create.
“Resistance is the universal enemy of the artist,” and, “The professional knows that Resistance is like a telemarketer; if you so much as say hello, you’re finished.”
— Steven Pressfield
What most people haven’t realized is that the failing, the vulnerability, the publishing — that’s actually the point.
It’s not about the new sales. It’s about becoming the person who gets daily sales.
To be that person, you have to fail in public. That’s the trade-off. You don’t get one without the other.
Yes, The Failure Hurts
For the record, I’m not happy I made the mistake. Just like I’m not happy if I miss a meeting, let down a client, forget to send an important email, or publish a video with the mic turned off.
But the point isn’t to get it right. The point is to make micro pivots.
We all have this idea that someday, things will line up magically and we will get to the point where we got it right.
the perfect business model
the perfect system
the perfect sales letter
We want things to fit in these nice, metaphorical compartments where our lives and our work can be cozy and organized.
That’s not how it works. The daily work is never tidy. To truly learn, you must learn like a child, with complete abandon of the outcome. But ironically, this is the best way to get the outcome you desire.
So this is the permission you’ve been waiting for. Please, sign on a client that you don’t actually know how to serve. Make a big mistake and then refund a customer and send an apology email. Launch a product that no one buys. Write an email that no one reads.
YOU. WILL. NOT. DIE.
After enough failures, you start to figure it out. But unless you fail enough times, you’ll always stay right where you started.
Now go! Conquer the day with failure!
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
