How I Make An Extra $10,000 A Month Through My YouTube Channel
You don't need a lot of followers to make a lot of money.
I don’t have a lot of YouTube subscribers. As of this morning at 5:54 am MT, I have 3,115 subs.
I don’t have expensive equipment, and I don’t spend hours each week editing, storyboarding, planning and setting up.
Yet, even with a small follower count and novice video production skills, I am able to generate significant revenue from my YouTube channel.
In today’s issue, I will show you exactly how I generate an extra $10,000 a month from my YouTube channel.
Here’s my framework.
LFG. 🔥
Step 1: Be Specific
The biggest mistake people make when making YouTube videos (or creating any kind of content at all) is thinking that they need to “be themselves.”
I am not a creator. I’m an entrepreneur. I don’t create content to express myself (that’s what my journal is for). Rather, I create content to grow my brand and make sales.
To grow your business, you want to establish yourself as an authority in a particular niche or industry. If you look at my YouTube channel, you will see that all of my videos are related to online entrepreneurship. More specifically, my videos are about …
SEO
Newsletters
Creating directories
You will see that every once in a while I’ll do a book review, but I still see those videos as part of my brand, because I love to read and I love applying the lessons I’ve learned from books to my businesses.
The point is, my YouTube channel is not a creative outlet. It’s a marketing channel. You want people to watch your videos because they want to learn how to build something for themselves, and they see you as the expert in the field that can help them.
So the first step is to decide what it is you’re going to make videos about. It can be anything, but it has to be something.
fitness
accounting
installing fireplaces
power washing
literally anything
Pick your business and go all in. You’re not trying to become a YouTuber, you’re using YouTube to grow your business. It’s critical that you see the difference.
Step 2: Publish The What, Sell The How
Recently, I have been making a lot of videos on directories. In these videos, I explain, with as much details as possible, what someone should do if they wanted to build a directory business for themselves.
These videos generate a lot of interest. If you look at the comments of my most recent video, it’s clear that people are excited and interested in this type of business. They clearly understand WHAT they should do.
But, in my videos I DO NOT explain the how.
Building directories effectively has taken me years to learn and master. It’s a skill that has generated millions of dollars for myself and my partners. I give as much transparency as possible to the results my directories have generated and I don’t shy away from the results, the value, or any hacks and secrets I have learned over my years.
However, after people watch my videos, they should be thinking to themselves …
“This looks great, I like what Tim is doing, but HOW do I build a directory for myself?
I want my videos to put someone into this mental state of wanting to do something but not knowing exactly how to do it.
Step 3: Use Content To Collect Leads, And Then Make Sales In Person
Different models call for different sales techniques. For instance, I sell premium subscribers to my newsletter and Charles and I sell memberships through Copyblogger Academy directly through a sales page.
However, for high dollar sales, such as my coaching or my directory building services, those deals require long conversations and higher personalization.
As such, I fully incentivize people to contact me directly through email in my videos. If they fill out a contact form, then I ask for their phone number and I text them or call them right away.
I’m probably repeating myself, but I need you to understand this point.
YOU USE YOUTUBE TO GENERATE LEADS AND MAKE SALES FOR YOUR BUSINESS. YOU DO NOT TRY TO MAKE MONEY ON YOUTUBE THROUGH THE ADS PLATFORM, SPONSORSHIPS, OR ADS.
With this strategy, I am able to make high dollar sales.
For example …
Last week, I closed a 5 figure directory build. However, I am probably going to be doing a partnership deal on that site, as it’s a directory in a space that I am very excited about.
I’ve brought in 4 new students for my coaching program, and 3 of them came directly from my YouTube channel.
I am currently talking with someone who saw my videos on building a directory for local contractors, and I sent the payment link this morning.
The best part, I am getting anywhere from 150 - 250 new subscribers each month.
So it’s completely reasonable to expect this trend to continue over the coming months and years. As I continue to establish myself as an authority in the directory / SEO / writing space, I fully expect to be closing more deals and scaling up.
In Closing
I want to make it totally clear that I am not “good at YouTube.”
I use a basic web cam for my videos and my video quality isn’t very good. I record my videos on loom, I have a basic audio input, and I don’t have a studio. I record my videos in my office. (However, I do think my backdrop looks pretty good for how it came out. Especially because I just bought an awesome old school leather couch from some dude in Boulder.)
It is the substance of my content and my expertise that makes my YouTube channel effective.
People find me through search, subscribe to me because they like what I say, and then reach out to me and do business with me because I have earned their trust through my transparency, my insight, and my commitment to publish every week.
I’m telling you, don’t over think it.
If you have a smart phone, you have everything you need.
Start recording, start publishing, and get better as you go.
Your future self will thank you.
