
I’ve learned a lot about the art of DM setting over the last few weeks.
I am nowhere close to being an expert, but I’ve closed a few deals through cold DMs recently, and I think I have some experience to share.

It’s Very Effective If You Do It Right
I avoided outbound DM setting for a long time.
To be clear, I’ve done a lot of outbound sales for my agency, but that was different. It was all healthcare professionals, and most of them I contacted through email and phone calls, so the initial outreach had a different tone.
The reason I avoided DMs for my other products, like Copyblogger Academy, is because when I observe my own behavior, I notice that I ignore or block almost every person who sends me an automated DM.
So if I ignore them, wouldn’t most people ignore me?
Wrong. DM setting is extremely effective. But you need a few things.
A reputation
A good personality
A genuine interest in what people say
Patience
Let’s break these down.
1. A Reputation Precedes You
I’ve spent years publishing free content, providing value, and building my brand. It still surprises me how many people are excited to hear from me when I send a DM.
Most spammy DMs come from people I’ve never heard of. They haven’t invested in their brand or content.
Content acts as a lubricant. If you consistently provide value before the initial connection, you dramatically increase the chances of having a real conversation.
2. Make People Feel Important
My wife can become best friends with anyone in minutes.
Sometimes we’re standing in line at a coffee shop, and I watch her instantly build connections with people. She has this magnetic energy that draws people in.
I’ll never have her natural charisma, but I’ve learned how powerful it is to make people feel good. The key is to make them feel important.

what are they doing?
what are they interested in?
how has their work been going?
what ideas do they have?
The book How to Win Friends and Influence People has probably impacted my daily life more than any other.
If you can make someone feel important, they’ll be more open to what you have to say. But it only works if you’re genuine. People can sense when you’re full of it.
3. Patience
DM setting has one huge advantage. The conversation doesn’t really end.
Once the prospect is in your ecosystem, they’ll keep seeing your content. Your offer stays in the back of their mind when they see your posts, read a success story, or revisit the DM thread.
Sales often emphasizes urgency, and sometimes that’s true. But if there’s no trust, urgency just feels pushy. The last thing you want is to sound like you need the sale.
Patience and a sincere desire to help are more powerful than rushing. When it’s time to close the deal, urgency helps. But before that, showing up with calm confidence and a clear understanding of how you can help is the move.
I Still Have So Much To Learn
It’s been a few months, and I finally feel like I’m no longer a total beginner. But I know I’m still early in the process.
If I were selling agency services, I’d feel more confident in my ability to deliver. But selling The Launchpad and Sales Training products feels new and unfamiliar.
That said, I’m grateful. I’m no longer managing a thousand clients, and I have space to focus on one core client while learning a fun and valuable new skill.
