I'm Making Progress
When I started training Muay Thai, I thought that kicking would be easy. I grew up playing soccer so why wouldn’t I think that?
I was so wrong.
To properly kick a soccer ball is a totally different function than properly kicking a person. You wouldn’t think they would be so different, but they are.
I have been training Muay Thai on a regular schedule for more than a year. Learning how to properly throw a kick has been one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done with my body. I’ve never had to control my hips and my core muscles in this way before.
This weekend I went to the gym to train and I recorded a video.
Although this video may not look impressive, it’s the fact that I’m able to throw a rear kick slowly and controlled that is actually the coolest part for me.
I’m turning my hip, I’m swinging my arm properly, I’m pushing my shoulder forward to block my chin and I’m sticking my hand in my opponents face. Also, after I throw the kick I’m getting my foot back behind me in my fighting stance.
I still need to tighten up my lead hand a bit, I should have it curled to my head (like I’m answering a phone) to protect my face and my head from the counter punch.
I’m really proud of these kicks. I have so much more to learn.
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
