New Tattoo
I love the graphic novel series Saga.
It’s brilliant. The main characters are Alana and Marko. They are from different planets who are at war with each other. Alana is from “Landfall” and Marko is from “Wreath.”
Wreath is a moon that orbits Landfall, and since the destruction of their worlds would lead to the destruction of the orbit of the planets, the powers that be “outsourced” the war to neighboring planets and paid countless different species to fight the war and act as mercenaries.
Their two people are referred to as Landfillians and Wreathers. But they are more commonly referred to as “wings” and “horns”, which are considered stereotypical names and almost racist names. Similar to how in WW2, American’s called Japanese “Japs.”
(No disrespect to any Japanese people reading this).
The two fall in love when Marko is taken prisoner and Alana is stationed to watch him. They run away together and soon after, have a baby.
The baby’s name is Hazel. And she is my absolute favorite.
She is half horn (from Marko’s side) and half wing (from Alana’s side). This means that she can fly but she can also use magic, in the way the horns can.
Hazel is seen as an abomination, because she is proof that the two sides don’t have to be at war with each other. The war itself has turned into an essential part of much of the galaxies economy, because so many planets and species depend on the financing of the war to keep their citizens paid.
I’ve loved this story ever since I read the first page of it. I’ve been wanting this tattoo for years and yesterday, I finally sat in the damn chair long enough to get the outline done.
Here’s the cover that my tattoo was inspired by. This is the cover of Issue 1 Volume 1.
By May be found at the following website: http://www.comicsbulletin.com/main/news/press-release-image-comics-saga-1-brian-k-vaughan-and-fiona-staples-sells-out-gets-reprint., Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=35115924
And here’s the new tatty. Obviously it still needs coloring.
P.S. - Yesterday was a moment of realization that I am getting older. After 3 hours of line work, I felt so exhausted and borderline sick. I got home and passed out at like 7 o’clock.
Man … time flies.
