People are not designed to live online. The internet removes consequences, and consequences are important for learning.
Sometimes, the best thing to do is punch someone in the nose. Some of the best learning experiences come from the most painful rejection. The internet softens the blow and the consequences that are so crucial for our development as human beings interacting with the world around us.
There are no consequences to insulting people online. If you get rejected online, then you can just swipe right (or is it left?)
By now we all know, too much time on internet will make you miserable. Sadly, many of us are learning the hard way that the safety of a keyboard is not worth the torture of isolation.
Billions of dollars have been invested into keeping people online. But I believe that society is catching on. We know the tricks, we see the VERY LOUD YOUTUBE HEADLINES, and we are better at recognizing clickbait.
In short, people are ready to get back to real life.
I believe some of the best investment opportunities will be made in the real life.
A Sad Fact
People are DYING for connection. Look at these search trends. It’s actually heartbreaking.
What’s worse is that everyone is waiting around hoping and praying that someone would come and talk to them, or introduce themselves, or ask them to get a cup of coffee. We all want someone to talk to us, but we’re too scared to talk to other people, even though the other people want us to talk to them.
This is your opportunity. This is a way for you to be a leader and connect the others that are starving for connection.
Here are some ideas …
An events organizer: My guess is that every bar, hair dresser, nail salon, and Indian restaurant is tired of posting stupid pictures on Instagram. My gut tells me (I have no data to back this up, but I’ll do some research) that small businesses are realizing that local events, flea markets, and block parties are a much better way to get connected to the community and potential customers than endlessly posting on social media. Start putting on local events in your neighborhood. Build an events planning business or a networking coalition. The first few will probably be duds, but it will grow.
Monthly meet up group: My friend David and I spoke about starting an entrepreneurs “cool kids club” in Denver. Where each month we get together and talk about life, business, marriage / relationships, and deals we’re working on. You could do the same. You could charge $1000 per year for membership. I you get 100 members, that’s $100,000 per year.
Fitness events in the park: I live right next to a giant lake. I always see people doing yoga or playing volleyball games. I can not believe I don’t see personal trainers out there giving free workout events. If I were a personal trainer I would be absolutely crushing it with this strategy. I’d get one of those lawn signs with a QR code and stick it in the grass next to the workout and build my email list that way. 100% chance it works.
People Are People
Your dopamine receptors have been hijacked. But the most privative part of your brain, and therefore the most redundant, will never be able to deny its essential needs.
Your lizard brain needs connection and tribe.
I would love to see more businesses start moving towards in person connection. The emotional attachment to your business will be 50X stronger. It’s absolutely worth doing.
I’m taking this seriously as well. I think Charles and I might start hosting in person events throughout the country for Copyblogger. We’ll see.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.

In this crazy little online world we live in, 'offline' is incredibly undervalued. It not only can bring massive momentum to business but it can bring a lot of joy and fulfilment from the connections made in person.
Right on the mark Tim. Thanks for saying this out loud.
