The longer I’ve been sober, the weirder I think drinking is.
For the record, I’m not a cultist ideolog. I think alcohol is great, and I fully support you in your drinking. I’ve had some of the best times of my life while wasted. It’s not at all that I think drinking is bad or immoral.
I just think it’s … weird.
Think about it.
The majority of society NEEDS it. It’s like we can’t have fun without it. There is an entire world out there full of wonder and adventure, and almost all of us spend our weekends inside dark rooms spending our money on poison that will make us fat, make us do stupid things, and make us sick.
Huh?
Alcohol is a depressant. Physiologically, alcohol can’t help you be happy, it can only help you be sad. It’s not to say that alcohol can’t assist in a naturally fun situation. You all know what I mean when I say that. Your inhibitions are lowered and you relax and you do things you wouldn’t normally do. It’s fun, I get it.
But fundamentally, alcohol is a depressant. It’s not possible to feel happy from developing a drinking habit. That would be like saying you want to get more vitamin D by sitting in a cave. That’s just not the way it works.
These days, when I see drunk people, it’s a real turn off.
Their faces are all googly eyed, they are not in control of themselves, they look … stupid. The part about it that I find so strange is that I don’t think any of us actually want to drink. I think we all want to be healthy and successful and intentional with our lives.
I know this because when we flock to people we admire, we always look for the same qualities. We admire people who are in control, who are fit, who are healthy, who have bright smiles and positive energy.
So then why do we so easily gravitate towards behaviors that take away from all of those qualities?
Idk .. it’s weird.
Like I said, I’m not writing this to make you feel bad or even to suggest you need to get sober. I know plenty of people who have a great relationship with alcohol and more power to them. That’s not my point.
My point is that being sober has improved my life in every imaginable way. There are zero downsides to it and only upsides.
I can’t imagine why more people wouldn’t want this.
I feel the same way! It is weird that we feel the need to have a substance to socialize and that it is so normalized in our society. When I see people drunk and acting a fool now, I feel so lucky that I found a way out! Great piece!
