There's No Such Thing as a "Visionary."

I hear the phrase “oh he’s a visionary” thrown around a lot. Immediately we think of Steve Jobs or Mark Cuban. To become a visionary requires experience and a perspective that is the by product of hard work.

No one is born a visionary, people build experience and through their hard work they gain perspective which gives them a lens of which to view the world. Their vision is simply a result of hard work.

Let me Explain

With entrepreneurship being so trendy, young adults are entering the real world with a skewed understanding of what it takes to be successful. Somehow this idea of “thinking our way to success” is believable. People actually believe this shit.

After watching Steve Jobs or The Social Network enough times, we’re convinced that all that is needed is a good idea and then VC’s will be lining up to fund our next adventure.

That’s crazy.

To be at the top, or to be in a position where you may potentially be labeled a visionary requires a fuck load of work hours, an open mind and an uncanny ability to persevere after repeated failures.

After all, the only way to get good at something to to fail over and over again.

There is no such thing as a visionary, there are only people that have done enough to have learned enough.

Never Let Your Ego Fool You Into Thinking Otherwise

I admit, I was flattered to hear this. It made me smile and made me feel like a big shot to know that someone out there sees me in this way.

After I thought about it, I realized how important it is for me to completely reject the compliment. To allow myself to believe my own hype would essentially be negating the hours I have put in. I don’t want to be a visionary, I want to be a doer.

I make every second count. I grind and I don’t let failure bring me down. Most of all, I don’t buy into the bullshit of being a visionary. I believe in doing, nothing else.
