Yesterday, I wrote about how I’m betting that Meta’s new app, called Threads, will take a huge chunk out of Twitter’s market share. Ultimately, I think Threads wins the entire market share, or at least enough of it to become the dominant player.
It’s only the first day, but it looks like I predicted correctly. Let’s take a look.
Zuckerberg posted on Threads (do we called it threading?) about the download numbers.
The Threads App quickly jumped to number one on the app store.
Threads is trending number 1 on Twitter, which is embarrassing for Elon.
As I spoke about yesterday, Twitter has about 300 million active monthly users. Threads just snatched up 10 million of them. Assuming all 10 million start spending more time on threads than on Twitter, that’s 1 / 30 of Twitter’s entire market share.
In addition, Twitter has been struggling to earn advertising revenue. Businesses are weary of advertising on Twitter since there is a relative possibility their ad will be placed right alongside a homophobic tweet or a Trump endorsement, neither of which look good. Considering the ROI on Twitter ads is so low, it’s not worth it.
But, for all of Meta’s negative impact on society, they are absolutely a great advertising platform. The back end dashboard, the targeting, and the effectiveness of Meta’s ad platform is far superior to Twitter. Imagine what happens when Meta unleashes that same ad platform onto Threads.
It’s a smart move. For the cage match, I’m betting on Zuckerberg.
