Why I'm Not Interested In Learning How To Code With AI
But, what ... aren't you creating an AI newsletter?
I’ve been learning as much as I can about AI. I’ve been watching videos on topics like:
Building AI agents
Creating input automations
Small language models
Quantum computing
Anything with AI in the title
After soaking up as much knowledge as possible, I’ve come to a conclusion: I have no desire to learn how to build with AI. In today’s issue, I’ll explain why.
LFG. 🔥
Building Is Not The Same As Selling
Years ago, I first heard the “How to Get Rich Without Getting Lucky” podcast series. I’ve since listened to it probably 20 times. The lessons in that series are timeless and have shaped my decision-making as an entrepreneur.
One of the key takeaways is Naval’s discussion about the difference between builders and sellers. Generally, people who excel at building aren’t great at selling, and people who excel at selling aren’t great at building.
Me? I’m a seller. (You could also think of a seller as “a communicator.”)
That said, I also consider myself a novice builder. I’ve built hundreds of websites, developed a few products, and created many large brands. But in my view, brand building is more aligned with selling than it is with building. Brand building and sales are both forms of storytelling.
There’s No Good Reason For Me To Become A Builder
I’m 38. It doesn’t make sense for me to become a coder and learn the ins and outs of high-level technology being developed every day. It’s far more logical and effective for me to build a team of skilled people who can execute on my vision. Builders need salespeople just as much as salespeople need builders. It’s a symbiotic relationship, and I bring value to these partnerships.
If I were to dedicate myself to learning how to code, it would take hours of daily effort. Even then, I wouldn’t be as fast or skilled as the younger generation growing up with these tools. Instead, I’ll double down on being a great writer, storyteller, and communicator. Nothing is more valuable than that.
It Doesn’t Mean I Will Be Clueless
I want to have a baseline understanding of the technology. That’s why I will:
Write a daily newsletter
Create videos about AI
Read and learn as much as I can
The Shop AI is fundamentally built around AI tools. If I were running an AI-branded company without understanding AI, people would see right through me. I need to be in the top 5% of people regarding AI knowledge and skills. But I’m not interested in building an AI product.
I see AI as a tool to enhance what I’m already great at. My zone of genius is writing, brand building, lead generation, and leadership.
What’s Your Zone of Genius?
I encourage everyone to identify what they excel at and double down on those skills.
While watching all these AI videos, my initial thought was, “I’m going to get left behind.” But that’s not how it works. New technology changes society, but the world still needs communicators to organize and execute.
Are you a builder, or are you a communicator? Whatever your zone of genius, find a partnership that complements your skills. That’s what I’ve done, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
Love you guys. Talk to you Monday.
Tim
P.S. I’m taking The Little Dude to Philly this weekend to watch The Eagles dominate the pansy ass Cowboys. Dallas sucks. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES! 🦅🦅🦅
P.S.S. I’m starting to organize my new year. I need your opinion. Would you rather me first create a course on building directories? or a course on building a Google My Business agency? Hit reply and let me know. Whichever gets the most replies is what I will do.

I think starting with Directories would be great! Thanks Tim!
Ha ha. Timely post because I have been going back and forth with the idea of learning more about coding and AI agents, or focusing on what I already know.
However, the FOMO about AI is real.
Regarding the first course, I vote for directories.
P.S. I am curious why you call the course GBP Agency and not Local SEO Agency, for example?
