For anyone who follows my personal site, you know that I am hawkish on Twitter. The culture of the site is crumbling, the reach is crashing, and I am seeing very little value in continuing to use the app.
This will be painful for me to say, but I think Meta’s new social media platform, called Threads, is going to destroy Twitter.
Why?
Zuckerberg is really good at stealing other people’s ideas and then executing on them. He stole stories from snapchat, and reels from TikTok. Not to mention buying Instagram and Whatsapp for dirt cheap.
Twitter is ripe for the taking. It’s a real shit show in there.
Facebook / Instagram already has the network. Facebook has (get this) 2.13 BILLION active monthly users while Twitter has 300 million active users. The reach alone gives Facebook (a.k.a. Threads) a huge advantage.
The writing community is very hungry for a new platform to show our work. Substack’s social app (called notes) is a flop and most writers are flocking to LinkedIn, but LinkedIn doesn’t necessarily give the creative freedom and news worthiness that Twitter does. Writers (for the most part) stay away from Instagram and TikTok because, well … we are writers.
I don’t know what to expect and I absolutely hate that I am about to jump on board another Meta platform, but I think it will be a good way to grow my email list.
I’ll let you know.
