Yes, You Should Start A Podcast
It won't make you famous, but it will make you money. Just not in the way you think.
Yesterday, I recorded a podcast with Andrew Rohm.
Andrew is 19 years old. He’s a broke college student who is building a design and marketing agency that works with local contractors in Wisconsin.
After the podcast, Andrew said “Hey Tim, I have one request. Could you accept my LinkedIn connection?
This made me laugh, because I get about 50 LinkedIn connection requests a day, and I usually ignore every one of them. I have a strict policy about who I accept connection requests from, and so the fact that Andrew easily convinced me to accept gave me a good chuckle. This kid is going places.
So Andrew and I are now friends. If he ever wants access to me to ask me a question or gain some insight, he has it.
And that’s the value of podcasts.
How I Bought Copyblogger
Copyblogger.com is a blog. It’s a media brand that create exposure to other products. Before I became involved, the business of Copyblogger Media used to monetize through different products. One of those products was a WordPress theme business called StudioPress.
The founder of StudioPress is a guy named Brian Gardner.
When I was doing my podcast, I reached out to Brian Gardner to see if he would come on my show. I couldn’t believe it when he said yes. I was thrilled to talk to him.
Brian then introduced me to Jonny Nastor, who was a hero of mine as I was first building my company and then Jonny came on the show. Jonny had a podcast called Hack The Entrepreneur, that I would listen to religiously as I skate boarded into my office.
Through this introduction, I was able to buy Brian Gardner’s 15% ownership of Copyblogger. Over the next year, as I became the 100% owner of of Copyblogger, I was then able to make a partnership with Jonny Nastor and together we formed Digital Commerce Partners.
All of these relationships and opportunities came to me because I first had conversations with Brian and Jonny through my podcast.
When I was doing my podcast, I never ran ads, and I never sold any products. But strangely, my podcast is the highest ROI marketing channel I ever had.
What’s funny, is that the ROI didn’t come from the listenership or the exposure, it came through the conversations I had with my guests.
Other Relationships I’ve Made From My Podcast
Seth Godin
Brian Clark
Amanda Natividad
Ramit Sethi
Dan Go
Polina Pompliano
Shaan Puri
Eric Jorgenson
Pamela Wilson
Many many more … (I recorded about 300 episodes by the time I finally gave it up).
These are all people who I’ve been able to build first name relationships with, simply because I spent an hour talking with them about their work, lives, and ideas on my podcast.
You’re Measuring The Wrong Metric
Most people never start the podcast because they think they won’t get any listeners or because it will take too long to get started.
And it’s true.
It’s nearly a 0% chance that you will make any money from advertising or product sales from your podcast. At the height of my podcast, I had 5000 listeners a month, which isn’t a lot.
But that’s not important. What’s important is the relationships I built.
Business and life is about relationships. It’s about who you know, and about who knows you. Luckily for us, happiness and quality of life is also measured through relationships. The entire point of life is to surround yourself with people you love. If through a podcast, you can surround yourself with people who also inspire you, then that’s a win / win for everyone.
So start a podcast.
Not because it will get you rich (although if you do it long enough, it will create indirect wealth like it did for me), but because it will open your life up to new relationships and opportunities you didn’t even know existed.
Love you guys. Have a great weekend. Talk to you on Monday.

Great advice. I am working on launching my podcast within the next week. I have recorded a handful of episodes and they have been empowering for me. I delayed a long time because I was afraid that it wouldn’t generate the revenue that I wanted it to and I felt like if I was going to spend the time it needed to bring direct financial correlation. I am convinced now that it doesn’t need to. I look forward to what I can learn and how I can grow from it. The more I dive in, the more important this part of it becomes and the less important the financial side is, so thank you for validating this.
I'm just curious Tim, would you do a podcast with a man who has been permanently banned from LinkedIn because he opposed views on the platform that spread lies about President Trump and Brexit?
Would you interview a man who has been permanently banned from Medium for pushing back against anti American articles?
Would you interview a man who believes that the very same AI millionaires are pushing on owners will be the tool to destroy your grandchildren's freedom
